Border Country Sports to Join Forces with Bennington Martens

The local sports website that covers the Adirondack League and Southern Vermont League schools along the New York/Vermont border, and the first-year team in the American Basketball Association will be awardng the the Border Country Sports Bennington Martens Player of the Week award to a high school boy and girl hoopster every week during the season.

"We are very excited to collaboarate with Christopher Kidd and Shawn Pratt and the Bennington Martens," Border Country Sports founder Keith Harrington said. "I believe the Martens will do great things both on and off the court and will be huge for the area. I hope this is just the start of our relationship."

Each week Border Country Sports will select a boys and girls high school player of the week from local high schools. The player honored at a Bennington Martens game.

"I told Chris I think the key is to get some fans in the gym to see the quality of product the Martens and their ABA opponents are putting on the floor. Once they do they will surely return for more games," Harrington added.

The Bennington Martens are the newest member of the ABA, a historic professional league that in the past has featured such players as Julius "Dr. J." Irving, Artis Gilmore and George "Ice Man" Gervin. The league reached its height in the 1970s but has been making a comeback in recent years.

The Martens currently play their home games at the Heritage Family Arena Rutland Rec Community Center in Rutland, formerly the home of the College of St. Joseph's Fighting Saints. The team at some point will be moving into a new building in Bennington. The new arena is currently under renovation at the Old Bennington High School on Main Street.

The next Martens home game is scheduled for tomorrow night, Saturday December 11th against the ACC Cardinals. Tip off time in Rutland is scheduled for 6 p.m. Head out to Rutland and check out the Martens.

Border Country Sports will be naming the first Border Country Sports Bennington Martens Players of the Week on Monday. For more information about the Martens or for game tickets click the link on the Border Country Sports home page.
