Good Morning! With the Border Country Sports Blog, I'm Keith Harrington.
What a fantastic weekend for local sports fans. There was literally something for almost everyone.
The Albany Empitre won their second championship in the last three years as they defeated the Columbus Lion 78-62 to win the National Arena League crown at the Times Union Center. The Empire won the Arena Football League's ArenaBowl XXXII in 2019.
Covid-19 wiped out all of last year's arena football action, but even though it was a new league the Empire didn't miss a beat.
Staying on football for a bit, the Glens Falls Greenjackets moved to 2-0 on the season to defeat the Plattsburgh North Stars 34-7. The win gives the Greenjackets the annual Mayor's Cup.
Saturday at Saratoga Race Course was the Fourstar Dave Stakes. Won of the biggest stars in horse racing the past several years, Got Stormy roared to victory to claim the race honoring one of Saratoga's all-time most popular horses.
Finally, last night I was in attendance for "The Battle at the Bowl at Devil's Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vermont. Many of the biggest stars in Northeast dirt racing were in the house including Stewart Friesen, Matt Sheppard, Marc Johnson, Mike Mahaney, Demetrios Drellos and Ken Tremont, along with the weekly top drivers.
Sheppard came home with the checkers in the big race of the night, the 50 lap Battle of the Bowl, taking the big $10,000 winner's check back to Waterloo, New York.
A couple of special congratulations going out to Katrina Bean who picked up he first career win in the limited sportsmen division and my former student Kaydan Rice on his first top 5 finish in the mini stock feature.
