We have all heard the saying, "If it's not broke don't fix it." Well that applies to my horse handicappong. I had a viable and successful strategy and this year during the first weeks of the Saratoga meet I decided to experiment. I tried a new approach to picking races. It failed badly.
So this week I decided to go back to what I know. Using the handicapping skills that had worked well for me in the past. Bingo! Five winners on Sunday and four yesterday. I also had a couple of near miss seconds.
So, even though it wasn't broken and I chose to break it, going back to what works seems to have my Saratoga meet heading in a good direction. Lesson learned.
The feature race at Saratoga today is the $150,000 Galway Stakes for three year old fillies at 5 1/2 furlongs. The morning line favorite is Empress Tigress with John Velazquez aboard. Empress Tigress won the Coronation Cup Stakes at Saratoga on July 15th and is 2-0 for her career.
The second and third place horses in the Coronation Cup are also entered. Poppy Flower for Bill Mott with Jose Ortiz and Derrynane with Joel Rosario for Christophe Clement. Poppy Flower has been the money in 7 of 9 career starts and has a win and a second this year. In the second place finish to Empress Tigress last month Poppy Flower had a difficult trip and actually I feel ran the best race.
