Granville Field Hockey Rolls to Win

By Keith Harrington

It won't always be this easy, but for now the Granville field hockey team is basking in their dominance. The Golden Horde won their second straight game Saturday to begin the season as they rolled past Gloversville 8-1 in a non-league matchup played on the Huskies home field.

Natalie Williams had a hat trick and Raegan Swain added two goals and an assist to lead coach Katie Barber's club. Haylie Barber had three assists.

Granville imposed their will right from the opening face off. Swain struck early and often, hitting the back of the cage twice in less than a minute. Swain opened the scoring off an assist from Barber with 13:16 to go in the first period. Swain scored her second goal 59 seconds later at the 12:17 mark with Barber again credited with the helper.

Natalie Williams converted a pass from Swain at the 9:40 mark to make it 3-0 Granville.

In the second Williams scored two consecutive goals to increase the lead to 5-0. The second goal of the game by Williams came at the 9:57 mark of the quarter and was unassisted. Williams completed the hat trick with her third goal off of a Barber assist 3:06 before halftime.

The Golden Horde extended the lead to 7-0 in the third quarter on goals from Anna Koutrakos and Alyssa Martindale. Koutrakos picked up an assist on the Martindale goal.

Paige Pauquette closed out the scoring with a goal with 9:49 remaining.

Granville had 21 shots on goal and 10 offensive corners. Gloversville had three shots on goal and four offensive corners.

Kalyn Gould and Megan Decker both played well in goal and split a pair of saves.

Things will become a little more challenging for the Golden Horde this week when they open up Adirondack-Wasaren League play Wednesday at Greenwich.

Granville is now 2-0 on the season.
