Granville High School wrestler Brent Perry represented the Golden Horde well as he went 3-2 at the USMC Greco Roman Junior Nationals at the Fargo Dome in Fargo, North Dakota. Perry competed in the 195 pound weight class for 18 year olds and under.
The 64 wrestler bracket was part of an event that featured 1,140 competitors from 48 staes.
Perry was faced with a tough draw, having to wrestle William McCleary of Utah in the opening round. McCleary placed second at the event a year ago. McCleary defeated Perry by technical fall 8-0.
Perry then reeled off three wins in a row. First he defeated Daniel Garovich of Califorinia, pinning him in 2:21.
Next Perry topped Syrron White of Minnesota 8-0 by technical fall.
Perry's third win in a row came when Perry pinned Patrick Brophy of South Carolina in 1:19.
Perry's meet then ended with a 16-8 loss to Connor Jacobs of Pennsylvania.
Considering he has very little experience with the Greco Roman style of wrestling Perry has a solid performance.
"I think this is only his fourth Greco Roman tourament," Perry's father David said via text from Fargo. "He did very well."
Perry's coach at Granville was also pleased and sees the potential that Perry has in the Greco Roman discipline.
"He has a tremendous affinity for Greco Roman," Steve Palmer said. "Looking forward to getting him more experience for next year."
This winter Perry finished with a mark of 38-6 with 21 pins according to CNY Wrestling . He won the Section II Class C title at 189 pounds and the Section II Division II championship before finishing 7th at the state tournament.
