Border Country Sports-September 7

Good Morning! With the Border Country Sports Blog, I'm Keith Harrington.

Yesterday was closing day for the 2021 Saratoga horse horse meet. And as usual the stars were out at The Spa. No I'm not talking about Food Network star Bobby Flay who was there to watch one of his horse runs. I am talking about the local celebs who were in the house. Both who I had not seen in awhile.

First, as I was waiting to congratulate my parters with America's Pastime Stables for their win with Frills in the fourth race someone was waving to me. "I thought that was you," she said.

It was former Castleton University women's basketball star Jessica (Banks) Turner. Turner is a CU Hall of Fame member. After leaving Castleton she was an assistant coach at Middlebury College. She is now the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Skidmore College in Saratoga and lives in nearby Gansvoort.

A little later in the day I found out that Alphonso Howlett was in the house. I found Zo at a table in the clubhouse at the finish line having some dinner with friends.

Howlett played college basketball at Green Mountain. He was the Head Men's Basketball Coach at St. Joe's before the school closed. He is now an Assistant Coach under Paul Culp at Castleton.

It was great to see both local coaches.
