Argyle Falls to Oriskany in Class D Softball Semifinals

The fantastic late season run by the Argyle softball team came to an end Saturday as the Scots fell to Section III champion Oriskany 8-3 in the New York State Class D semifinals at the Moriches Sports Complex on Long Island.

Something had to give in this one. Argyle came in riding a six game winning streak. Oriskany had won 13 in a row.

Early on it looked like it may be Argyle extending their winning streak and moving on to the state final. However, a big fourth inning for the Redskins proved to be the difference.

“Sometimes you just can’t bounce back”,” Argyle coach Lexi Nassivera said. “We just couldn’t rally but all season long we did. It’s a lot for the girls.”

The Scots jumped out to a 3-0 lead. In the second, Maddy Eldred blasted a home run over the left field fence to give Argyle a 1-0 advantage.

The Scots added two more runs in the third. Paige Cormie reached on an error and scored after two wild pitches. Kylee Humiston then reached on an infield single and scored on an RBI groundout by Lilly Kingsley.

The Redskins rallied with a seven spot in the fourth. Kaylen Buehler hit a two-run triple to bring Oriskany within 3-2. Jordyn Carlo drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 3-3. Then Megan Wright connected for a bases clearing triple to the five her team the lead and they never looked back.

Oriskany added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

Juliett Tagliaferri earned the win in the circle, scattering six hits and striking out five. Tagliaferri also contributed on offense with a double.

“Our kids made some awesome plays and Oriskany just had solid hits at the right time in the right spots,” Nassivera added. “My girls are champions in my book and it’s just bittersweet that our journey has come to an end. I’m proud beyond measure.”

Argyle finishes the season 10-7.

Oriskany fell to Deposit-Hancock 8-1 in the championship game to finish 19-4.
