Torres and Johnson Lead Golden Horde at Slater Duals

The Granville-Fort Ann wrestling team closed out 2021 by competing in the Fair Haven Slaters Duals at Fair Haven High School on New Year’s Eve, going head-to-head with Oneonta, Mount Anthony, Springfield, Fair Haven and Warrensburg.

The Golden Horde finished 2-3 at the event with wins over Springfield and Fair Haven, and losses to Oneonta, Mount Anthony and Warrensburg.

Jaxon Torres and Quinn Johnson had expecially strong meets, each going 5-0 for the Golden Horde.

Granville-Fort Ann topped Springfield 41-30. Against the Cosmos, Jaxon Torres defeated Brayden Pinsanault by fall in just 40 seconds at 113. At 145 Zachariah Wilson pinned Marshall Simpson of Springfield in 1::32.

At 120 pounds Granville-Fort Ann’s Quinn Johnson cruised past the Cosmos’ Dillan Lacasse 16-0 on a technical fall.

Nick Crum, Thomas McMahon and Brent Perry picked up forfeit wins to add to the Golden Horde total.

Against the host Fair Haven squad, Granville-Fort Ann came away with a 41-30 victory. McMahon, Wilson and Perry picked up wins by pin for the Golden Horde.

At 132 McMahon topped Fair Haven’s Liam Robinson by fall in 1:10. Wilson took care of Matt Wreck by fall in 1:06. Perry needed 1:33 to dispose of Taylor Therrien at 195.

Johnson defeated Lincoln Wilcox by technical fall 19-3 at 120 pounds.

Torres, Scott Whitmann, and Dylan Procella were awarded forfeit wins.

Granville-Fort Ann opened the day by dropping a 42-25 decision to Oneonta. McMahon, Crum and Wilson recorded wins by fall for the Golden Horde. McMahon pinned Nolan Stark in just 14 seconds. Crum defeated Isreal Nadal in 1:44. Wilson needed 3:50 to take down Alan Michael Rubin.

Torres defeated Marshall Mahar 6-0. Johnson blanked Alan Little 11-0.

Granville-Fort Ann then lost to Vermont powerhouse Mount Anthony 53-15. Torres, Johnson, Crum and Perry earned wins for the Golden Horde.

Torres edged Logan Davis 5-4. Johnson defeated Alex Perez 10-3. Crum nipped Alex Brown 13-11. Perry pinned Daniel Kahn in 1:36.

The day concluded with the Golden Horde falling to Adirondack League foe Warrensburg 42-24. Torres finished his perfect day with a pin of Cameron Carpenter in 4:40. Whittman defeated Lucas French by fall in 3:19.

Perry defeated Ayden Rushia by decision 7-1. Johnson topped Zachary Olden 6-4.


Fair Haven Finishes 2-3 at Slater Duals

Like Granville, Fair Haven also went 2-3 at their home Slater Duals last Friday. Fair Haven defeated Springfield 42-26 and Oneonta 37-36. The Slaters fell to Granvlle 41-30, Mount Anthony 54-24 and Warrensburg 57-17.

Against Warrensburg Tristan Hyatt earned a win by technical fall for the Slaters at 138.

Lincoln Wilcox at 120, Trey Lee at 126 and Liam Robinson at 132 had pins in the match against Oneonta.

Paityn DeLong, Gabe Bache and Tyler Terrian also picked up wins in the match.

Against MAU Bache, Colton DeLong and Trey Lee won by pin.

In the Springfield match DeLong and Wilcox picked up wins by fall.

Bache earned a win for the Slaters against Granville. All other points against the Golden Horde came from forfeits.


North Warren Girls Top Falcons

The North Warren girls basketball team tipped off 2022 with a non-league win over Northville 44-32.

The Cougars trailed 11-10 after a quarter, but the middle stanzas proved decisive as North Warren outscored the Falcons 25-12.

Tia Buttino led the Cougars with 13 points. Nicole Buckmn added 12 and Megan Bruno eight.
