Border Country Sports Blog-September 26th
Good Morning! With the Border Country Sports Blog, I'm Keith Harrington.
Warrensburg Runs Over Golden Horde
120 yards and three touchdown runs. That would be considered an oustanding game for most high school running backs. For Warrensburg's Dylan Winchell, that was just the first quarter. Winchell ran for 186 yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon as the Burgers ran over Granville 54-0 at Sam Eppolito Field.
It was the first game of the season for Granville who saw their first two games canceled due to Covid-19 quarantines, The fact that it was the fourth game for Warrensburg was clearly a factor.
Winchell began the game by capping off the first drive of the day with a 19 yard scoring run. He may have scored on the first snap of the game, but lost his footing and fell on what appeared to be a sure TD run. Caden Allen passed to Winchell for the two point conversion to give Warrensburg the early 8-0 lead.
On the next two Burgher possessions Winchell added to the lead. First he exploded on a 75 yard run to make it 16-0 after the conversion run by Tristan Hitchcock. Next Winchell scored from 26 yards out to extend the lead to 22-0. The conversion try failed.
Tim Kelly added a 26 yard scamper of his own to make it 30-0 after the conversion by Hitchcock.
Hitchcock scored the only touchdown of the second quarter on a five yard run. He also went in for the conversion to make it 38-0 Burghers at the half.
Kelly and Allen added second half TD runs to round out the scoring.
Warrensburg ran for 426 yards on the game. Winchell finished with 186 on the ground and Kelly 150.
Granville could only muster up 77 yards of offense. Matthew Barlow led the Golden Horde with 51 yards on 12 carries.
Warrensburg is 1-0, 4-0. Granville is 0-1, 0-1.

Tanagers Edge Argyle in Rivalry Game
Hartford won their second game of the week as they edged rival Argyle 1-0 in Adirondack League boys soccer on Saturday afternoon.
The game was a makeup game that was postponed previously due to Covid.
Hartford twice looked like they would take the lead. Two Tanager shots beat the Argyle goalie, but bounced off the crossbar.
The Tanagers finally broke through 13 minutes into the second half. After a throw in by Cody Baker, Michael Jones rifled a shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0 Hartford.
It turned out that is all that was needed for goalie Austn Wells and the Tanager back four who were credited with playing a solid game.
Wells finished with six saves to earn the shutout. Jared Montello stopped right shots for Argyle.
Hartford is now 3-3, 3-3.

Rutland Hands Slaters First Loss
Rutland handed Fair Haven their first girls soccer loss on Saturday, blanking the Slaters 3-0.
The Ravens wasted no time in taking the lead. Camryn Kinsman scored off a pass from Sydney Wood 40 second into the contest to make give Rutland a quick 1-0 lead.
For a longtime it appeared as though that would be the only scoring of the game. Rutland however scored back-to-back goals late.
Izzy Crossman and Brooke Schaffer scored just 48 second apart in the 63rd minute to push the Raven lead to 3-0. Kylee Niering assisted on the Crossman goal.
Freshman goalie Kate Hadwen had 17 saves for Fair Haven.
Rutland moves to 4-3. Fair Haven fell to 4-1-2.
