North Warren Wins First Ever Sectional Game
The firsts just continue to keep coming for the North Warren girls soccer program. Thursday the Cougars won their first ever sectional game as they rolled over Heatly 7-0 on their home pitch.
North Warren's first girls soccer season took place in the Fall II season last spring. The Cougars had a strong field hockey program for years before making the switch. It was the third win in a row for North Warren as they were coming off wins over Spa Catholic and Granville. The Cougars have won four of their last six.
#7 North Warren took a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime. Kianna LaGuerre scored two first half goals and Megan Bruno added another. Bruno and Sarah Whitman picked up assists. The first two goals by LaGuerre and Bruno came less than two minutes apart.
LaGuerre finished off her hat trick and added two more goals for good measure, finishing with five tallys in the game.
Nicole Buckman added a goal for the Cougars. Bruno finished with three assists.
LaGuerre has scored 11 goals in the last three games.
"Every team needs that one person who is hungry to score," North Warren coach Randy LaFountain said about LaGuerre. "I asked her today if she was ready to score and she said yeah, and she scored five goals. I finally found one."
Ruth Brior had the shutout in goal with four saves for North Warren.
North Warren, now 6-10 advances to challenge #2 Northville Thursday at 3 p.m.
Lake George Boys Advance in Class C
The Lake George boys soccer team moved on to the Class C quarterfinals with a 4-1 opening round victory over Berne-Knox.
In the contest Sam Knauf set the Lake George single season mark for goals as he hit the back of the net twice. Knauf now has 34 goal this season.
The Warriors led 3-0 at the half on two goals by Knauf and one from Kyle Dolan. Dolan and Poe Tutu were credited with assists.
Tutu made it 4-0 Lake George with a goal at the 51:18 mark of the second half. Dolan and Knauf assisted.
Zack Schwenk scored a late goal for the Berne-Knox.
Yogi Johnson was credited with five saves in goal for the Warriors.
Lake George, the third seed, now moves on to meet #6 Middleburgh in the quarterfinals Saturday at 3 p.m. The Warriors are 16-1 on the season.
Blue Devils Blank Mill River
The Poultney girls soccer team ended their best regular season in recent memory on a high note. The Blue Devils blanked Mill River on the road in North Clarendon 2-0 in an SVL match.
Katelyn DeBonis gave Poultney a 1-0 lead on a direct kick in the first half.
Hannah Webster made it 2-0 Poultney with a penalty kick in the second half.
Kenzie Ezzo earned the shutout in goal for the Blue Devils.
Georgia Donaldson and Hailey Hayes, both frehsman, played well in front of Ezzo on defense.
Poultney rounds out the regular season 7-6-1 and is hoping for a home playoff game.
Fair Haven Rolls Over Otters
Fair Haven led just 1-0 against a game Otter Valley team, but the flood gates opened in the final 40 minutes as the Slaters rolled to a 9-0 win over the Otters under the lights at LaPaca Field.
Brittney Love was again a vital part of Fair Haven's success as she hit the back of the net four times.
Elizabeth Love, Isabella Carrara, Lily Briggs, Ayame Merkel and Madison Perry all contributed goals for the Slaters.
Kate Hadwen had the shutout in goal for Fair Haven.
Fair Haven closes out the season 10-4-1 and should be a team to keep an eye on in the Division II playoffs.
