Barber's Goal Lifts Granville in Overtime

"It's tough to beat a team three times in a season." The old coaching adage proved to be accurate once again. However, difficult as it was for Granville to sweep the three game season seires with Salem-Cambridge they still got it done.

Granville got a goal from sophomore Haylie Barber in the opening seconds of overtime to slip past Salem-Cambridge 2-1 in the Section II Class C field hockey quarterfinals. The Golden Horde had won both regular season meetings in hard-fought battles.

Granville jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from Alyssa Martindale with 1:17 left in the first quarter. Barber was credited with the assist. Martindale was called up from junior varsity and inserted into the lineup due to injuries and she cashed in on the opportunity.

Salem-Cambridge drew even in the second half. Mary Kate McPhee found the back of the cage to tie the contest at 1-1 with 3:11 remaining in the third.

The Golden Horde didn't waste anytime in the extra session. Granville quickly pused the ball into the circle. Reagan Swain fired a shot from the middle of the circle that was kicked away. Barber was waiting on the right side of the cage to collect the rebound and distribute in the back of the cage, setting off a frenzied celebration.

"It was a back and forth very compeitive game," Granville coach Katie Barber said. "It is always is with them."

Megan Decker had six saves in goal for the Golden Horde. Brailyn Wright had eight saves for Salem-Cambridge.

Third seeded Granville is now 12-4 and moves on to meet #2 Hoosick Falls in the semifinals on the Panther's home field next Wednesday at 3 p.m. Hoosick Falls swept the season series, including a 4-3 OT win just over a week ago.
