Border Country Sports Blog-May 2nd
Good Morning! With the Border Country Sports Blog, I'm Keith Harrington.
Today is Monday. And that means it is time for the Monday Morning Hot List! My look at who was "Hot" this week in high school sports.
-Poultney rolled to a 23-2 win over White River Valley on Saturday, and Kait DeBonis had a huge game for the Blue Devils. DeBonis was the winning pitcher and gave up just two runs while striking out eight. She was also 3 for 4 at the plate in the contest.
-Otter Valley softball's Riley Keith had an outstanding game last week in a win over Fair Haven. Keith smacked her first career home run, but she was even more impressive in the circle. Keith struckout 19 Slaters out of a possible 21 outs in the game. A dominant performance.
-Proctor continues to develop a star softball pitcher in the making. Working with a pitching coach in Saratoga, NY is paying off Phantoms pitcher Cadence Goodwin. Goodwin showed off new found speed in a 3-0 win over Green Mountain, striking out seven.
-Another great week for Whitehall's Madi Gould. Gould once again was on fire in the pitching circle and at the plate. Against rival Granville Gould pun a one-hitter with 14 Ks. She also blasted a home run, doubled and single. In a 21-0 win over Corinth Gould fired a two-hitter with14 Ks. She was 3 for 4 at the plate with two homers and six RBIs.
-Ava Ruby also had a nice week for Whitehall softball. Against Granville Ruby had a key bases loaded double that gave the Railroaders a spark. In the Corinth game Ruby was 3 for 4 with three RBIs.
-Granville's Caleb Nelson pitched a gem against Hartford. Nelson took a no-hitter into the seventh before it was broken up by Bryce Tyler of the TanaForts. Nelson had 13 strikeouts and did not give up a walk.
-While we are on the subject of Granville baseball, Alex Torres had a stellar week for the Golden Horde. Torres hit a grand slam home run in a win over Argyle. He also hit a key home run in the seventh in a 2-0 win over Hartford-Fort Edward. By the way, Torres is doing double duty this spring. He also is on the Granville track and field team.
-Lake George remained unbeaten this week in ADK softball. On Monday Shannon Starratt and Olivia Gates combined on a no-hitter against Fort Ann. Starratt also homered to keep her HR streak alive. The Warriors then defeated Salem in a battle of unbeaten teams. Starratt was 5 for 5 with a three-run homer against Salem and also it a home in a win over Argyle.
-It has been a difficult season thus far for Fair Haven softball, but the Slaters had a shining moment against Burr and Burton this week. Ashley Carvey tossed a one-hitter as the Slaters shutout the Bulldogs. Carvey struckout eight.
-The Fair Haven track team had members compete in the prestigious Penn Relays this week in Philadelphia. T On Thursday, Fair Haven competed in the girls 4x100 meter heats, where the team of Ayame Merkel, Isabella Carrara, Ella Kuehn and Maddy Perry had a time of 57.83 seconds.
-Speaking of Lake George the Warrior baseball team also continued to roll along unbeaten under first-year coach Pete Puricelli. The Warriors defeated Salem this week in a battle of unbeatens. Luke Sheldon fired a three-hitter for the Warriors. Brandon Lamby was 4 for 5 at the plate and drove in three runs.
-Haylie Barber had a great week for Granville softball. Barber was 4 for 5 with five RBIs agianst Argyle and adding a pair of hits against Hartford-Fort Edward.
-Even in a loss to Whitehall, the Granville softball team came up with two of the most impressive defenive plays you will ever see. Centerfield Melissa Beaver made a spectacular catch of a ball hit to center. The ball appeared to be going out of the park when Beaver made a leaping catch and flipped over the fence to make the grab. The Golden Horde also pulled off a rare triple play in the game. Shortstop Rachel Beaver snagged a line drive. Tossed to Reagan Swain at third. Swain touched the bag for the second out and tagged a runner from second who ran on the pitch for the third out. Incredible!
