Border Country Sports Blog-June 18th

Good Morning! With the Border Country Sports Blog, I'm Keith Harrington.

I am back blogging after a few days off and that will be the norm going forward for the summer. I will pop on a few days a week, but with high school sports over for the year it makes it more difficult to come up with content.

Today I am previewing and event that I will be attending tomorrow. The first ever visit of the Short Track Super Series to Devil's Bowl Speeday. A great event to kick off my summer vacation.

Short Track Super Series Rolls Into Vermont for the First Time

If you are a fan of dirt racing there is only one place to be tomorrow. That place is Devil's Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vermont. The Short Track Super Series will roll into Devil's Bowl Speedway for the first time ever and the roster of drivers entered in the event shapes up like a Who's Who of northeast dirt track stars.

With the appearance Vermont will become the 10th different state to host the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series Fueled By Sunoco. The event dubbed the Slate Valley 50 will pay $10,000 to win. Thetour stop for the traveling series serves as Round No. 5 – the halfway point – of the River Valley Builders North Region $15,000 championship chase.

The race also pays $1,000 for 10th and $500 to take the green flag.

Leading the list of stars entered in the event is "Superman" Matt Sheppard of Savannah, New York. Sheppard has two wins in the first five races and holds a 27 point lead in the series standings. He is a three time STSS champion.

Danny Creeden who currently is second in the points and Mat Williamson who is third are also locked in for the event, as are Andy Bachetti (4th in points) and Anthony Perrego (5th in points). Perrego is coming off a win at the ‘Battle at Bloomsburg’ in Pennsylvania.

Mike Mahaney, Danny Tyler, Bobby Hackel, Brett Haas, and Mike Gular round out the top 10 in the series standings. Mahaney, Hackel and Haas have already been announced as entered fhis weekend at The Bowl.

NASCAR Truck Series star Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, New York will also be on hand. Friesen will be heading to the Green Mountain State after he and his wife Jessica compete in the truck series race today in Knoxville, Iowa.

Among the other notable entries for the event are Jimmy Phelps, Neil Stratton, Max McLaughlin, Tim Fuller, Erick Rudolph and former Devil's Bowl regular Demetrios Drellos who returns.

Weekly Devil's Bowl racers from the Sportsman, Limited Sportsman, and Mini Stocks will also be in action.

Although I highly recommend that you head out to the track to take in this race in person, the entire night of racing, along with every STSS race in 2022, will be broadcast live on FloRacing

Gates open for the pits at 2 p.m. and grandstands at 3 p.m. Hot laps begin at 4:15 p.m. with racing at 5 p.m.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is located at 2743 VT 22A West Haven, Vermont.
