Golden Horde Pull Away With Big Second Half
Granville Basketball means outworking opponents, getting hands on the basketball on defense, converting transition baskets and hitting 3-pointers. At halftime last night Golden Horde coach Justin Nassivera told his team that they needed to return to "Granville Basketball." They did just that.
"I told them at halftme. Just play Granville basketball. Don't worry about Whitehall, don't worry about the fans. Don't worry about the officials. We just flicked the switch. We just started playing a lot harder."
Granville used an impressive second half to break open a close game as they defeated local rival Whitehall 61-45 on the Railroader's home court.
The game was nip and tuck in the first quarter with the lead changing hands eight times. A Jake Whiting trey gave the Railroaders a 13-11 lead after one.
Whitehall broke away for a 21-15 lead in the second on a basket from Cash Burgey and a pair of Brandon Bakerian free throws. Granville answered with a 10-2 spurt fueled by five points from Nathan Rathbun and a 3-pointer from Logan Harrington. The Golden Horde led 29-25 at the break.
In the third Granville began to impose their will. The Golden Horde fashioned an 11 point lead on the strength of an 11-6 stretch. Whitehall responded with a 5-0 run to trail just 42-36 after three.
Granville put the game away in the fourth. Leading 44-38 early in the stanza, the Golden Horde ripped off 14 straight points to take a commanding 58-38 advantage.
Caleb Nelson led Granville with 21 points. Cody Nelson added 10 and Alex Warrington 10.
Burgey led Whitehall with 12 points. Bakerian added eight.
Granville is 6-2, 7-3. Whitehall is 6-3, 7-4.
