Good Morning! With the Border Country Sports Blog, I'm Keith Harrington.
The Poultney softball team was on the verge of avenging a loss to West Rutland earlier in the season, but the Golden Horde rallied to defeat the Blue Devils 14-10 in SVL softball Thursday.
West Rutland won the initial meeting 18-6 via the mercy rule, but the Blue Devils came to play on their home diamond and used their offense and the sharp pitching of Kait DeBonis to open up a lead.
Poultney led 10-7 going to the top of the seventh, but Westside scored seven runs in their final at bat to grab the lead. The Golden Horde were reportedly helped by Poultney errors.
Peyton Guay was again a key factor for the Golden Horde. Guay was the winning pitcher with 14 Ks. Guay also led Westside at the plate with multiple hits.
The Blue Devils did manage to pound out 13 hits against Guay, but it turned out to be not quite enough.
Emily Handley and Bella Mack were both 3 for 4 for Poultney. Laura Winter contributed two hits.
DeBonis spun a 5-hitter with six strikeouts for the Blue Devils.
