Border Country Sports Blog-April 20th

Good Morning! With the Border Country Sports Blog, I'm Keith Harrington.

I finally got a chance to sit down and catch up with you all as I am on Spring Break with my family. Monday we were on the road traveling all day and yesterday in Toronto my laptop didn't seem to want to connect with the wifi at our hotel. This morning we are in Niagra Falls on the Canadian side, but can literally see the New York border, so I seem to have better internet here.

This will likley be the last blog until I get back to the United States as we are heading back to Toronto later this morning until Friday. I expect I will encounter the same connection issues back at our hotel there.

So for today here I am. The schedule is very quiet with schools on break, but here is a quick update on a little action.

Blue Devils Outscore Rival Fair Haven

It wasn't a textbook verson of a high school softball game, but it certainly didn't seem to lack for entertainment. Poultney took full advantage of hit batters, walks and the hits that they could muster up to outscore rival Fair Haven 29-12 on Monday on the Slaters home diamond.

Poultney jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first and led 15-3 in the third.

Emily Handley was 3 for 6 at the plate with a grand slam home run. Laura Winter went 2 for 5 for the Blue Devils.

Kaitlyn DeBonis earned the win in the circle for Poultney.

Jaylena Haley doubled for the Slaters.

Poultney moved to 2-1 with the win. Fair Haven fell to 1-2.

On Tuesday Poultney fell to Bellows Falls 15-2 to fall to 2-2 on the season.

Westside Romps Over White River Valley

Anyone who follows girls high school basketball in our area knows about the prowess of Peyton Guay on the hardwood. However, the West Rutland youngster is starting to make quite a name for herself on the softball diamond as well.

Monday Guay helped lead the Golden Horde to a dominating win over White River Valley 25-0 in a five inning contest.

Guay was the winning pitcher, giving up just three hits while striking out 10 in the shutout performance. She also smacked a pair of doubles and finished with three hits.

Arianna Coombs also doubled for Westside.

West Rutland is now 3-0 on the season.

Fair Haven Baseball Cruises Past Poultney

The Fair Haven baseball team used big second and third innings to pull away from Poultney on Monday, cruising past the Blue Devils 16-3 on their home diamond.

Fair Haven scored 10 runs in the second against Poultney starter Nolan Geno and added five more in the third to lead 15-0 and put the game away.

Matt Heibler went five innings for Fair Haven to earn the win, striking out nine Blue Devils. Joe Buxton pitched the fifth to close the game out.

Kyle James, Max Kyhill and Joe Buxton had RBI hits for the Slaters who were aided by several Blue Devil fielding miscues.

Poultney scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hagen McDermott had a key hit in the fram for the Blue Devils.

Fair Haven is 2-0. Poultney is 1-2.
