Border Country Sports Bennington Martens Players of the Week

Hey everybody! I hope you all had a great weekend. It is time once again to name my Border Country Sports Bennington Martens Players of the Week, brought to you by the Bennington Martens of the American Basketball Association. Our only local professional basketball team. Attend a Martens game in Rutland at Heritage Family Field House before the season is over.

When I select my Players of the Week I have a couple of criteria. Rules that I try to live by. However, like anything else, rules are meant to be broken. One rule I try to keep is not to give the award to the same person twice in a season. The other is I usually select players from the New York side of the border from just the Adirondack Leagueas the ADK is what I cover on a regular basis.

This week I was forced to break my only rules. Why you may ask? Easy! There were two high school basketball players who had such incredible weeks that I just had to make exceptions to my usual criteria to honor them.

My girls POTW is Maggie McKearin of Proctor. Yes, I know. Maggie has been a POTW earlier in the season. However, this past week the senior for the Phantoms was exceptional. In a 73-29 win over Poultney McKearin eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark, joining her sister Abby and brother Conner on the Proctor list. McKearin had 40 points in the contest.

Earlier in the week in a win 76-33 win over Bellows Falls McKearin exploded for 42 points, becoming the first Proctor Phantom girls player to have a 40 point game.

Congrats once again Maggie!

Our boys POTW this week is Jesse Kuzmich of Greewich. Okay......I know we typically only cover Adirondack League action on the New York side of the border, but Kuzmich's performance this week was just too special to pass up.

In a 74-51 win over Spa Catholic Kuzmich poured in 36 points. Kuzmich nailed 11 3-pointers in the game, breaking the school record.

In a 64-29 win over Cambridge Kuzmich went over the 1,000 point mark for his career. He scored 22 points in the contest.

Also, in a non-league game against Hartford Kuzmich scored 21.

Congrats Jesse!
